An Angolan customer's week with our direct shear, triaxial, and consolidation systems — and a partnership that goes far beyond instruments
It didn't start with a handshake. It started with a question about shear force. When our customer from Angola stepped into our training room, he carried more than a notebook — he carried the curiosity of a seasoned engineer and the hope of a nation ready to build.
Over the following days, we worked side by side on three instruments that form the backbone of geotechnical testing: the fully automated direct/residual shear system, the triaxial testing system, and the pneumatic consolidation apparatus. We introduced the instruments, explained the setup and procedures, demonstrated the entire process, then stepped aside and let him take control.
The customer carefully trims a soil specimen, achieving a clean, flush edge — a detail that reflects his precision and patience. And he did. With steady hands, he trimmed a soil specimen — the excess soil cut flush, edge to edge, as clean as a machined surface. When the first attempt to demold didn't go perfectly, he didn't rush. He carefully removed the sample, started over, and repeated until it was right. After the third try, he looked up with a quiet smile and said: "Every time you fail, it tells you something you need to learn." His professionalism and patience earned not just our respect, but our admiration.
A Two-Way Street of Learning
We came as teachers, but we also gained new perspectives from him. Between loading sequences, he shared a detailed picture of Angola's growing infrastructure needs — new roads, airport expansions, and a young generation of engineers hungry for practical knowledge. He wasn't just looking for machines. He was looking for a partner who could help build capacity. "
While waiting for test results, three of our trainers listen intently as the customer shares Angola’s infrastructure development vision and needs.
This is not a simple business transaction," he said. "What I learn here, I will pass on to our young engineers. They will build Angola."
That single sentence turned a hands-on training into a shared mission.
Breaking Stereotypes, One Day at a Time
The training was focused — but the experience went far beyond the room. From the moment he landed, everything was arranged: comfortable hotel, dedicated vehicle for airport pick-ups and daily commutes, and meals prepared with care. Between sessions, we took him to nearby cultural spots and markets, where he tried out his newly learned "Xiè xie" with a vendor. When the vendor replied "Bù kè qì", he repeated it with a warm smile, laughing at his own pronunciation.
A relaxed moment between the customer and our Sales Manager, Ms. Sarah, chatting over a lunch break before the food arrives.
"Before this trip, I had a very different picture of China," he admitted over dinner. "Here, everything is so organized. The streets are clean, the trees line the avenues, and your country is moving fast. China is not just a factory — it is an engine of global progress." He paused, then added softly: "I want my children to learn Chinese. They will need it for the future."
More Than Customers, More Than Friends
We discussed technical parameters such as shear rates and stability standards, but also about music, family, and hobbies. He showed us photos of his travels around the world and told us stories of his hometown; we shared with him glimpses of everyday Chinese life. After several rounds of tea and laughter, the distance between host and guest quietly faded away.
On his last day, the customer joins us in the conference room to exchange thoughts and summarize the training experience.
"This week will stay with me for the rest of my life," he said on his last morning. We felt exactly the same.
A Partnership That Builds More Than Roads
When he left, he didn't just take a set of operation manuals. He took a new understanding of our products, our people, and our commitment. And we gained a friend who will, in turn, train a generation of Angolan engineers — spreading not only hands-on operation skills but also a lasting trust in what we build together.
This is what we mean by "beyond business". This is why we do what we do.
