To identify flat particles based on their dimensions, place the particle’s width at the wider end of the caliper and secure the pivot screw. Without readjusting the caliper, test the same particle at the narrower measuring end. If the particle fits into the smaller gap, it is classified as flat. The procedure for identifying elongated particles is identical. If the particle is too large for the smaller gap in both measurements, it is categorized as neither flat nor elongated.
